Injury, overuse and even everyday wear and tear can cause you to develop pain in your legs or knees.

Our Approach to Leg and Knee Overuse Injuries

Repetitive movements can cause overuse injuries, with activities such as cycling, climbing and jogging often resulting in irritation and/or inflammation over a period of time. Acute injuries, on the other hand, occur after a traumatic event or direct blow to the knee or leg.

Acute injuries include, but are not limited to:

  • Ligament tears (such as an ACL injuries)
  • Kneecap fractures or dislocation
  • Meniscus tears
  • Sprains, strains and other injuries that affect the kneecap and surrounding tendons

When major joints like the knee are injured, the body responds by becoming inflamed. If the injury heals successfully, inflammation will subside, but if it does not, inflammation can become a chronic, often painful condition. The recommended “RICE” regimen—rest, ice, compression and elevation—will resolve some swelling at the outset.

Leg and Knee Overuse Injury Treatment at Inspira

Depending on the severity of your leg or knee injury, your doctor may recommend a knee brace to stabilize the area. Physical therapy is often used alone or in conjunction with other treatment methods.

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair muscles, tendons or ligaments and to restore proper movement of the leg.
